{"id":28896,"date":"2024-11-06T03:50:25","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T08:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/blog\/coaching-for-self-actualization-part-i\/"},"modified":"2026-01-15T11:24:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T16:24:09","slug":"coaching-for-self-actualization-part-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/blog\/coaching-for-self-actualization-part-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Coaching for Self-Actualization: Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe science of psychology has been more successful on the negative than on the positive side<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It has been revealed to us much about man\u2019s shortcomings, his illness, his sins, but little about his potentialities, his virtues, his achievable aspirations, or his psychological\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">health<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> must find out what psychology might be if it could free itself from the stultifying effects of limited, pessimistic and stingy preoccupations with human nature.&#8221; (Motivation and Personality, 1954, p.354)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In an environment where being a psychologist meant either following a Freudian psychoanalytic path or looking for the \u201cmachine-like levers\u201d of human beings through a behaviorist path, Abraham Maslow offered a fresh, human-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">centered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0perspective. Maslow is one of the founding members of the third force of psychology, known as humanistic psychology, emphasizing the inherent drive towards self-actualization and discovering our potentialities. Many ideas in coaching, such as potential, strength, purpose and creativity have been strongly influenced by Maslow\u2019s work. It is no wonder, then, that he is among the top ten cited psychologists of the 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0century.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maslow strongly believed that the other schools of thought in psychology were not showing the whole picture of who a human can be and proposed a different approach. As a coach practitioner and a Ph<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0candidate, I claim that Maslow would have been happy to see how professional coaching is aligned with his vision of helping people reach their full potential.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My focus is on defining\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maslowian<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0coaching and coaching for self-actualization in the 21<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0century. Here are 3 important introductory takeaways in coaching for self-actualization.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Hierarchy of Needs \u00a0Reimagined.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maslow is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">highly associated with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0his theory on human motivation and the hierarchy of needs, typically represented\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a pyramid. Interestingly, Maslow never envisioned his work to be represented\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by this shape<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rather, that famous pyramid\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was developed by a different industrial\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">psychologist, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0represents the 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fcentury thinking of hierarchy and power. Diving deeper into Maslow\u2019s work, I am convinced that the pyramid does not reflect his vision. Given the ongoing movement between needs,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0ladder or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">circle\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">better represents his theory<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. My effort to re-envision his work\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0concentric circles\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more clearly illustrates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0our interdependence on this planet and reminds us that self-actualization is also growth in awareness.\u202fThe circles also symbolize an ecological thinking rather than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">egological<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0(ego<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">centered<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">) thinking.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-76068\" src=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Ego-eco-300x130.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-76069\" src=\"https:\/\/coachingfederation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/5CC-w-1920x1080-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dynamics Needs Analysis.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Also, largely due to the popularity of the pyramid, many understand the hierarchy of needs as a linear, one-step-at-a-time progression. But it is not actually like unlocking the next level in a game or moving onto the next chapter of a book. Human needs are constantly at play, with a dynamic interplay between them. In fact, at any given time we are under the influence of several needs. Lower needs usually get prioritized, unless there is a higher need in play \u2014for example, choosing to go to Starbucks with your coworkers instead of buying that pizza you\u2019re craving, because you choose to prioritize the need for belonging over your hunger.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How does this show up in coaching? First, this requires a coach to help a client understand their current needs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eet them in the present moment and help the client attune to their physical, emotional<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> mental needs. Deficiency needs (D-needs) create more craving and are more commonly shared\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0among human beings. A human can live their whole life in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0realm of D-needs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0chasing safety, belonging and esteem needs unless they tap into the B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">needs. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Being needs (B-needs), by contrast, are about our meta-needs of truth, justice and beauty. Maslow calls these B-values. B-needs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">or B-values\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are more unique and need to be explored.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are about our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guiding light<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: our purpose, vision, values, strengths and principles that are all indicators of our calling and our desire to reach potential. This view is highly aligned with the field of developmental coaching and I would even claim that development coaching is coaching for self-actualization.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe try to make a rose into a good rose, rather than seek to change roses into lilies <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2026 i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t necessitates a pleasure in the self-actualization of a person who may be quite different from yourself.
