I\u00a0must\u00a0admit, the last time I had mentor coaching was in 2013, while I was still going through\u00a0<\/span>The University of Miami Certified Professional Coach Program<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Until I had to renew my\u00a0Associate Certified Coach (ACC)\u00a0credential last year,\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coaching was the last thing\u00a0on my list I thought I would need to help strengthen\u00a0my coaching competencies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The International Coaching Federation (ICF)\u00a0<\/span>Credential Renewal<\/a> process\u00a0requires 40 hours of Continuing Coach Education (CCE).\u00a0\u00a0For ACC Credential holders, this\u00a0includes\u00a0completion of\u00a010 hours of\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coaching\u00a0over the three-year Credential cycle.\u00a0ICF defines Mentor Coaching\u00a0as\u00a0an engagement to\u00a0<\/span>provide coach-applicants (mentees) with \u201cprofessional assistance in achieving and demonstrating the levels of coaching competency demanded by the credential level sought by the mentee.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Moreover, the engagement has a focus of working specifically on a mentees\u2019 coaching skills.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Core Competencies at Mentor Coaching Sessions<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

ICF defines coaching as a\u00a0\u201cpartnership with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potentials.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i>As ICF-credentialed <\/span>coaches, we embody\u00a0eight\u00a0Core\u00a0Competencies<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that align with<\/span>\u00a0four\u00a0main pillars: setting the foundation;\u00a0co-creating the relationship;\u00a0communicating effectively;\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>cultivating\u00a0<\/span>learning and <\/span>growth<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Mentor Coaching is one of the many educational channels that ICF-credentialed coaches can use to further develop their coaching skills. At a Mentor Coaching session, you (the mentee) would determine areas of coaching skill development that you would like to work on and gain clarity around your strengths and areas in need of improvement. So, before attending a Mentor Coaching session, revisit the ICF Core Competencies and assessment markers to prepare yourself.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Experience in\u00a0Group and Individual Mentor Coaching Rounds<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Regardless\u00a0of if\u00a0you are joining\u00a0a\u00a0group or individual\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coaching\u00a0round, each is structured with a clear purpose and\u00a0defined\u00a0areas of\u00a0coaching skills\u00a0development that\u00a0the\u00a0mentee\u00a0wants to review and\u00a0be\u00a0provided feedback on.\u00a0If you haven\u2019t had\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coaching for some time, I would certainly recommend participating in\u00a0a\u00a0group\u00a0mentor coaching\u00a0first, so that\u00a0you\u00a0have the opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0observe various coaching styles from each of\u00a0coach-applicants\u00a0(mentees)\u00a0in the room (which is often Zoom\u00a0these days).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My experience in group mentor coaching rounds was invaluable, as the 90-minute session gave me the opportunity to think through the Core Competencies again and discuss strengths and stretches with peer coaches. I also felt that 15-minute coaching in the group session was beneficial, because participating coaches would share what they hear and do not hear, and provide constructive feedback on the coaching agreement, relationship with the client and your communication effectiveness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At\u00a0individual\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coaching sessions, you have more time with your\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coach to work on specific\u00a0Core\u00a0Competencies\u00a0and,\u00a0moreover, to explore your coaching style.\u00a0\u00a0Before\u00a0each\u00a0session with your\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coach, I would recommend re-listening to your recordings,\u00a0and making notes on your strengths based on assessment markers, and areas that you would like your coach to help you fine-tune\u00a0further.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In my sessions, I was able to\u00a0<\/span>hone\u00a0<\/span>in on\u00a0two\u00a0specific\u00a0Core\u00a0Competencies to work on.\u00a0Because of the trusted relationship I\u00a0had\u00a0with my\u00a0Mentor\u00a0Coach, she gave me\u00a0insight\u00a0into areas\u00a0that\u00a0I didn\u2019t notice,\u00a0particularly\u00a0the \u201cListens Actively\u201d competency, which\u00a0explores clients\u2019\u00a0behaviors or energy\u00a0shifts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Awareness & Confidence<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Mentor\u00a0Coaching\u00a0is one of\u00a0the\u00a0great\u00a0learning\u00a0channels\u00a0for\u00a0seasoned\u00a0coaches\u00a0to continue\u00a0developing\u00a0their coaching skills. \u00a0It\u00a0has helped me reflect\u00a0on\u00a0my coaching strengths,\u00a0<\/span>which then gives\u00a0me the motivation and confidence to pursue my next coaching milestone:\u00a0the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) Credential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
